Reporting to the Commercial Manager, a Quantity Surveyor is often referred to as the 'accountant of the building site' as they are responsible for calculating the amount and cost of materials and labour needed for building projects.
Quantity surveyor jobs exist both within client organisations and construction companies and are seen as being central to any good construction project. From the start to the completion of the project, it is essential that a tight reign is kept on cost and the implications of any decisions that may be made.
Accounting for construction costs as the project progresses is part of the remit of quantity surveying jobs on the consultant side as is the appointment and making of payments to the subcontractors as they complete sections of work. In turn they would request for interim payments from their client at various stages of the contract.
High level of numeracy and IT skills for quantity surveyor jobs
It is commonly accepted that a strong commitment to building sector knowledge is essential to a good quantity surveying career. The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and the Chartered Institute of Building are both excellent sources of information on career development and working towards Chartered status. However, just as important is the willingness to read and keep properly up to date with the latest building regulations that may impact on current and future projects.
Once the project is completed, quantity surveyors will work on the final accounts and any potential claims should they arise between the client, contractor or subcontractor. Employers look for excellent communication, interpersonal and IT skills. A high level of numeracy is also essential along with excellent financial management.
