You might be required to source and select appropriate sub-contractors and suppliers to who enquires are to be issued or provide assistance to the estimators to ensure that the procurement strategy adopted is appropriate for the contract. You will need to be on top of the project at all stages to ensure orders are placed back to back and produce a schedule of sub-contract warranties required under the terms of the main contract.
Buying for building services jobs
Other elements of your remit could include:
- Preparation of engrossed warranties so that competitive quotations received at tender stage are based on the agreed contract conditions
- Dealing with any issues arising on site and arrange for references, works and site visits to be undertaken, where appropriate
- Preparing the order/ letter of intent and arrange for the appropriate sign off before issue
- Ensure that all contract amendments are agreed with the Managing Surveyor and copied to the Surveyor after execution
- Payment terms different to those in the main contract procedures are to be signed off by the Managing Surveyor.
No formal qualifications are required for buying jobs but you will need strong management and organisational skills while technical knowledge is important for the programming and planning of the project. Understanding the size of the materials you’re buying is important as to spacing issues and also cost issues and storage expenses need to be considered.
